1. Optimal In-Game Settings
Divinum is a 2D pixel-art game with modest system requirements (minimum: Intel Core i3-6100, 4GB RAM, GTX 560 Ti). However, some players experience stutter or input lag due to specific settings or driver issues. Here are the optimal settings for smooth performance.
Display Settings
- Resolution: Native monitor resolution. Divinum is pixel art, so lowering resolution doesn't improve performance significantly and makes the art look blurry.
- Fullscreen Mode: Exclusive Fullscreen (not Borderless). Exclusive fullscreen reduces input lag and improves frame pacing. If you need quick alt-tabbing, use Borderless, but expect slightly more input lag.
- VSync: Off (if you have a G-Sync/FreeSync monitor) or On (if you don't). VSync adds input lag but eliminates screen tearing. With variable refresh rate monitors, keep VSync off and use G-Sync/FreeSync instead.
- Frame Rate Limit: Set to your monitor's refresh rate (60, 144, etc.). Unlimited framerate can cause inconsistent frame pacing and unnecessary GPU heat.
Graphics Settings
- Pixel Scale: 1x (native). Higher pixel scale renders at higher resolution and downscales, which looks slightly better but costs performance. 1x is optimal for pixel art.
- Particle Effects: Medium. High particle density can cause stutter during intense combat (many explosions/soulfire effects). Medium provides good visuals without performance hits.
- Screen Shake: Personal preference. Doesn't affect performance but can cause motion sickness. Reduce or disable if you feel uncomfortable.
- Background Detail: Medium. High background detail renders more parallax layers, which costs GPU performance. Medium provides sufficient depth.
2. Fix Stutter & Frame Pacing
If you experience periodic stutter (frame drops or hitches) during gameplay, try these fixes in order:
- Disable Steam Overlay: Steam → Settings → In-Game → uncheck "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game." The overlay can cause stutter in 2D games. You can re-enable it for specific games if needed.
- Close background applications: Browser tabs, Discord (disable hardware acceleration), streaming software, and other GPU-intensive applications can cause stutter. Close everything before playing.
- Update GPU drivers: Ensure you have the latest NVIDIA or AMD drivers. Outdated drivers are the most common cause of stutter in new releases.
- Set Divinum to High Priority: Task Manager → Details → Divinum.exe → Right-click → Set Priority → High. This gives the game more CPU time and reduces stutter from background processes.
- Disable fullscreen optimizations: Right-click Divinum.exe → Properties → Compatibility → Check "Disable fullscreen optimizations." This can improve frame pacing in exclusive fullscreen mode.
- Verify game files: Steam → Right-click Divinum → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Corrupted game files can cause stutter and crashes.
3. Reduce Input Lag
Input lag (delay between pressing a button and the action happening on screen) can make combat feel sluggish and parrying difficult. Reduce it with these steps:
- Use Exclusive Fullscreen: As mentioned above, exclusive fullscreen has the lowest input lag. Borderless windowed adds a frame of lag.
- Disable VSync (with G-Sync/FreeSync): VSync adds 1-2 frames of input lag. If you have a variable refresh rate monitor, disable VSync and enable G-Sync/FreeSync instead.
- Use a wired controller: Wireless controllers (Bluetooth) add input lag. Use a wired USB connection for the lowest latency. Xbox controllers with USB-C and PS5 controllers with USB-C work natively.
- Enable Game Mode (Windows): Settings → Gaming → Game Mode → On. Game Mode prioritizes gaming processes and reduces background interference.
- Disable HDR: If your monitor supports HDR but the game doesn't handle it well, disable HDR in Windows display settings. HDR processing can add input lag.
4. NVIDIA / AMD Control Panel Settings
NVIDIA Control Panel (for NVIDIA GPUs)
- Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings → Add Divinum.exe
- Power management mode: Prefer maximum performance (prevents GPU downclocking during gameplay)
- Low Latency Mode: Ultra (reduces render queue latency, lowest input lag)
- Vertical sync: Off (use G-Sync instead if available)
- Texture filtering - Quality: High performance (minor visual difference, performance gain)
AMD Radeon Software (for AMD GPUs)
- Gaming → Divinum → Graphics Profile
- Radeon Anti-Lag: Enabled (reduces input lag, AMD's equivalent of NVIDIA Low Latency)
- Wait for Vertical Refresh: Always off (use FreeSync instead)
- Texture Filtering Quality: Performance
- Surface Format Optimization: Enabled
5. Common Issues & Fixes
- Game crashes on launch: Verify game files, update GPU drivers, disable Steam overlay, and ensure your OS meets minimum requirements (Windows 7+). If crashing persists, try running as administrator.
- Controller not detected: Disconnect and reconnect the controller. Ensure Steam Input is enabled (Steam → Settings → Controller → General Controller Settings). Try both wired and wireless connections.
- Audio crackling/popping: Set your audio sample rate to 48000 Hz (Windows → Sound → Device Properties → Additional Device Properties → Advanced). Disable audio enhancements.
- Black screen on launch: Press Alt+Enter to switch to windowed mode, then change resolution settings. Update GPU drivers. Delete the game's config file (located in %APPDATA%/Divinum) to reset settings.
- Mac performance issues: On macOS, ensure you're running macOS 10.15 Catalina or later. Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3) run the game natively and should have excellent performance. Intel Macs may need to reduce graphics settings.
Note: This performance guide is based on the launch version of Divinum. The developers may release performance patches that address specific issues. Always ensure the game is fully updated before troubleshooting.
