Controller & Keybinds Guide

1. Control Overview

Divinum supports full controller compatibility (Xbox and PlayStation controllers natively) and keyboard/mouse play. The game features a "Keyboard Only Option" accessibility setting and playable without Quick Time Events. Controls are fully remappable on both controller and keyboard, allowing you to customize the layout to your preference.

The combat system relies heavily on quick reactions — parries, dodges, weapon switches, and special skills all need to be accessible at a moment's notice. The default layout is functional, but optimal remapping can significantly improve your combat performance, especially for parry-focused and combo-heavy playstyles.

Key Principle: The most important controls in Divinum are dodge, parry/block, and weapon switch. These three actions should be on the most accessible buttons — your fingers should never have to search for them. Prioritize these when remapping.

2. Xbox Controller Layout (Default)

Divinum uses a standard Xbox controller layout. Here are the default bindings:

AJump / ConfirmHigh
BDodge / Roll / CancelCritical
XLight AttackCritical
YHeavy AttackHigh
LB (Left Bumper)Block / ParryCritical
RB (Right Bumper)Weapon SwitchHigh
LT (Left Trigger)Special Skill 1Medium
RT (Right Trigger)Special Skill 2 / Use ItemMedium
Left StickMovementCritical
Right StickAim / Camera (if applicable)Low

Back / SelectMap / InventoryMedium

3. PlayStation Controller Layout (Default)

PlayStation controllers (DualShock 4 and DualSense) are supported natively with proper button icons. The layout mirrors the Xbox layout with PlayStation button names:

PS ButtonEquivalentAction
× (Cross)AJump / Confirm
○ (Circle)BDodge / Roll / Cancel
□ (Square)XLight Attack
△ (Triangle)YHeavy Attack
L1LBBlock / Parry
R1RBWeapon Switch
L2LTSpecial Skill 1
R2RTSpecial Skill 2 / Use Item

DualSense Features: Divinum supports DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers on PC (via Steam Input or native USB connection). The adaptive triggers provide resistance when blocking/parrying, and haptics simulate weapon impacts. For the lowest input lag, use a wired USB connection rather than Bluetooth.

4. Optimal Remapping for Competitive Play

The default layout is functional, but these remappings can significantly improve your combat performance, especially for parry-focused and combo-heavy playstyles:

Recommended Remap 1: Claw Grip (Best for Combat)

  • Block/Parry: Move from LB to LT (left trigger). This lets you parry with your index finger while keeping your thumb on the left stick for movement. You can parry and move simultaneously, which is essential for boss fights.
  • Special Skill 1: Move from LT to LB (left bumper). Special skills are used less frequently than parry, so the bumper is fine.
  • Weapon Switch: Keep on RB. The right bumper is easily accessible with your right index finger.
  • Dodge: Keep on B/Circle. The face button position is fine for dodge — you'll be using it with your right thumb.

Recommended Remap 2: Puppeteer (Best for Combos)

  • Light Attack: Move from X/Square to RB (right bumper). This lets you attack with your index finger while keeping your thumb on the right stick/face buttons for heavy attacks and dodges. Essential for fast combo strings.
  • Weapon Switch: Move from RB to Y/Triangle. Weapon switching during combos becomes a thumb action, which is faster when chaining weapon-switch combos.
  • Heavy Attack: Keep on Y/Triangle... wait, that conflicts. Instead, move Heavy Attack to RT (right trigger).

Warning: If you're using Steam Input remapping, disable it in Steam's controller settings and use the game's native remapping instead. Steam Input adds a layer of input latency. The game's native remapping has zero added latency. Go to Steam → Settings → Controller → General Controller Settings → uncheck "Xbox Configuration Support" / "PlayStation Configuration Support" for native input.

5. Sensitivity & Game Settings

Divinum is a 2D side-scroller, so camera sensitivity is less critical than in 3D games. However, these settings affect responsiveness:

  • Camera Sensitivity: Medium (default). Since the camera follows the player automatically, this only affects manual camera panning (if available). Medium is fine for most players.
  • Screen Shake: Low or Off. Reducing screen shake makes it easier to see enemy attack tells during intense combat. This is especially helpful for parry timing.
  • Camera Comfort: The game includes a "Camera Comfort" accessibility option. Enable this if you experience motion sickness — it reduces camera movement intensity.
  • Deadzone: Low (5-10%). A low deadzone makes movement more responsive. If you have stick drift, increase to 15-20%.
  • Vibration / Haptics: Personal preference. For competitive play, consider reducing or disabling vibration — it can be distracting during precise parry timing.

6. Keyboard & Mouse Bindings (Default + Optimal)

Divinum supports keyboard-only play (an accessibility option) and keyboard/mouse. Here are the default and recommended bindings:

ActionDefault KeyRecommended
Move Left/RightA / DA / D (or Arrow Keys)
JumpSpace / WSpace
Light AttackJ / Left ClickJ (or Left Click)
Heavy AttackK / Right ClickK (or Right Click)
Dodge / RollL / ShiftShift (thumb-accessible)
Block / ParryI / CtrlCtrl (pinky-accessible)
Weapon SwitchQ / EQ (index finger)
Special Skill 1U / FF
Special Skill 2O / RR
Use ItemHH
Map / InventoryM / TabTab
PauseEscEsc

Keyboard Tip: The recommended keyboard layout uses a "WASD + nearby keys" approach where all combat actions (attack, dodge, parry, switch, skills) are within easy reach of the left hand on WASD. This lets you keep your right hand free for mouse aiming or resting. The "Keyboard Only Option" accessibility setting ensures all actions are playable without a mouse.

7. Accessibility Options

Divinum includes 5 accessibility features:

  • Camera Comfort: Reduces camera movement intensity for players prone to motion sickness.
  • Custom Volume Controls: Independent volume sliders for music, sound effects, voice, and UI sounds.
  • Stereo Sound: Proper stereo mixing for directional audio cues (important for hearing enemy attacks from off-screen).
  • Playable Without Quick Time Events: All QTE sequences can be skipped or auto-completed. No mandatory button-mashing sequences.
  • Keyboard Only Option: Full game playable with keyboard only, no mouse required. All actions have keyboard bindings.

8. Controller Troubleshooting

  • Controller not detected: Disconnect and reconnect. Ensure Steam Input is configured correctly (Steam → Settings → Controller). Try both wired and wireless connections. Restart the game after connecting.
  • Wrong button icons (Xbox buttons showing on PS controller): Go to game settings → Controls → Controller Type → select PlayStation. This swaps the on-screen button prompts to match your controller.
  • Input lag on wireless controller: Use a wired USB connection for the lowest latency. Bluetooth adds 5-15ms of input lag, which can affect parry timing. For DualSense, use the official USB-C cable.
  • Stick drift causing unwanted movement: Increase the deadzone in game settings (15-20%). If drift persists, calibrate the controller in Windows (Set up USB game controllers → Properties → Settings → Calibrate).
  • Controller works in menu but not in game: This is usually a Steam Input conflict. Disable Steam Input for Divinum (Steam → Right-click Divinum → Properties → Controller → Disable Steam Input) and use native controller support.
  • Adaptive triggers not working (DualSense): Ensure you're using a wired USB connection (adaptive triggers don't work over Bluetooth). Enable DualSense features in Steam's controller settings or use the game's native DualSense support.

Note: Control layouts and settings are based on the launch version of Divinum. Additional control options or remapping features may be added in post-launch updates. Always check the in-game settings menu for the most current options.
